Android came to existence in the year 2003 by the efforts of an American company Android Inc., a tech company. This software was being developed for cameras at first but later on due to low market cap of camera they shifted their focus to smartphone market. In October 2003, Andy Rubin founded Android Inc. In Palo Alto, California, United states. The name Android was a nick name of Andy Rubin given by his co-workers for his love of Robots. The key employees of Android are Andy Rubin, Rich Miner, Chris White and Nick Sears.

In 17 August 2005 Google bought Android Inc. and from then on it has become a subsidiary company of Google corporation. At Google the team in charge of Android decided to develop Android OS on the base of Linux an open-source software, which is another software meant to run computers.

On November 2007 Google announced the Open Handset Alliance for promotion and development of Android operating system. The Alliance included many tech giants such as Intel corporation, Motorola Inc., NVIDIA Corporation, LG electronics, Samsung electronics, T-Mobile etc. This consortium of tech giants was made for the sole purpose of developing and advertising Android as a free open-source operating system.

On October 22, 2008, the very first phone that featured android OS was from HTC company called HTC Dream or T-Mobile G1. The names of each version of android starts with the letters from A-Z. The first android version was ‘Aestro’, after that came ‘Blender’ then ‘Cupcake’, ‘Donut’, ‘Eclair’, ‘Froyo’, ‘Gingerbread’, ‘Honeycomb’, ‘Ice-cream’, ‘Jellybean’, ‘KitKat’, ‘Lollipop’, ‘Marshmallow’, ‘Nougat’, ‘Oreo’, ‘Pie’, ‘Quince tart’, ‘Red velvet cake’, ‘Snow Cone’, ‘Tiramisu’, ‘Upside down cake’ and ‘Vanilla Ice cream’ at latest. You guys are welcome as most of you probably did not know what android version name was after “Pie”/9.
